Blackjack's goal is to win with a greater score than the dealer, while not exceeding 21. The act of going over 21 is described as 'busting'. It implies a loss that is automatic.
 

The Play - Basic Rules

Blackjack is typically played at the table with 2-7 players and employs one up to eight decks of 52 cards. Each number card (2-10) are worth the amount they are shown on. These face cards (Jack Queen, King,) score 10 points . Ace may be regarded as 1 or 11.

Each round, players put bets at their betting positions, often referred to as 'boxes'. Once the bets are placed, players receive two cards, with their faces up, before their betting positions. The dealer is dealt two cards: one face-up and the other facing down.

Starting on the left side to the left of the dealer every player is offered the chance to draw additional cards. Players may choose to either "Hit" or "Stand". If a player shouts "HIT," they will be provided with an additional card. They are then able to make a second call to 'HIT or simply 'STAND' if they don't wish to draw more cards. The player is able to 'HIT' repeatedly as often as they like, but must to be careful not to go over' (exceed a total of 21).

If a player fails to win the bet, they immediately have to forfeit the bet.

After every player has played, and whether they was busted or stood, the dealer will take their turn. They may, as before, either hit or stand'. If the dealer's hands exceed 21 - all players who did not bust will get their money immediately. Their bet is returned with the amount that is matched from the dealer's account.

If the dealer is able to make an acceptable hand then the cards are added up and the hands of each player are contrasted with the dealer's. If the player's hand is more than the dealer, they are awarded. If the player scores a tie with the dealer the initial wager is returned to player. In the event of a tie the player is liable for losing the bet.

Other Options That May Be Available During The Hand

• Split

If the two cards are a pair the players can split them, making two hands instead of the standard one per player. To finance splitting, the person is required place an additional bet that is equal to the initial.

• Double Down

After receiving the initial two playing cards, the players may double their bets while hitting. If they double down, the each player gets one extra card, and can't hit the same way. Many casinos permit the splitting of cards in the event that the second card creates another pair, but some have restrictions on the number of times that a player is able to split.

• Insurance

Insurance is a bet on the side that is given to gamblers when the dealer's card is an Ace. It protects the player from the dealer being a blackjack or blackjack' and offers them the chance to make a profit in the event that the dealer's hands total 21.
Insurance is provided before the dealer has checked their face-down cards.

• Surrender

If a gambler believes that they'll be unable to beat the dealer's hand they can decide to 'surrender'. With this method, players fold their hands, and are at risk of losing just half of their bet, instead of the entire amount.  A player is only able to forfeit their hands prior to receiving additional cards.
